Kota. On the occasion of World Literacy Day, the NSS unit of Akalank College of Education organized a lecture on the theme “Role of Literacy in Building a Strong Society.” The program commenced with a lamp-lighting ceremony by the college Principal Dr. Pinky Srivastava, Vice Principal Dr. Namrata Jain, keynote speaker and chief guest Dr. Prabhat Singhal (Retired Joint Director, Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Rajasthan), NSS program officers Dr. Ranjana Gupta and Dr. Sonal, along with faculty member Dr. Indu Bala Sharma.
The Principal and Vice Principal welcomed Dr. Singhal with a bouquet, after which Dr. Indu Bala Sharma introduced the guest to the gathering.
India’s Progress in Literacy Highlighted
In his address, Dr. Singhal highlighted that at the time of Independence, India’s literacy rate was only 17%. However, by 2024, this number has risen to 80%, a significant achievement that is propelling India rapidly from a developing to a developed nation. He also mentioned that Kerala and Mizoram have achieved literacy rates of 95%.
Dr. Singhal emphasized that education alone is not sufficient; one must also embody the true spirit of being literate to contribute effectively towards building a stronger society and achieving complete literacy in the country.
Commitment Towards Suicide-Free Kota
As a founding member of Hope Society, Dr. Singhal administered an oath to students to contribute towards making Kota a suicide-free city. He also announced that as part of awareness programs on World Suicide Prevention Day (10 September), a collective pledge will be taken.
Around 100 students pledged, “Main bhi Rakhwala,” committing to play their part in making Kota free from suicides. Dr. Singhal appealed to students and citizens to light a candle or lamp near their windows at 8 p.m. on September 10 to symbolize this resolve. Faculty members and staff also joined in taking the oath.
Words of Inspiration and Token of Gratitude
Principal Dr. Pinky Srivastava, in her address, urged students to not only acquire education but also adopt literacy and knowledge as guiding values in their lives.
To honor the keynote speaker, a book was presented as a memento by the Principal, Vice Principal, and NSS coordinators Dr. Ranjana Gupta and Dr. Sonal.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sonal. Stage proceedings were conducted by B.Ed. final-year students Ahimsa Goswami and Divya Awasthi.
