Don’t Let Rooftop Rainwater Go Waste

Under the Namami Gange Programme, an inspiring campaign was launched to conserve rainwater by channeling it into the ground through rainwater harvesting systems. The idea was simple yet powerful—to catch every drop of rain where it falls and when it falls, and to prevent it from flowing wastefully into drains.

Let us understand the potential:
If just 1 cm of rainfall falls on a 1,000 square feet rooftop, it can generate 1,000 liters of water. This is clean, usable rainwater that can be percolated into the earth to replenish the groundwater table.
Now imagine if a 2,000 square feet rooftop receives 50 cm of rain in a season. That would mean 100,000 liters (1 lakh liters) of water can be saved and stored underground!
In monetary terms, if the cost of water is estimated at ₹20 per liter, this translates into ₹20 lakh worth of water—harvested directly from nature without any treatment cost.

This simple practice not only preserves a vital resource but also mitigates water scarcity, especially in urban areas. Rooftop rainwater harvesting helps reduce dependency on external water sources, prevents flooding and drainage overload, and increases the water table in a sustainable manner.

It is therefore essential that we change our mindset and utilize our rooftops as powerful tools for water conservation. Every home, every office, every institution should consider installing a rooftop rainwater harvesting system.

Let this be a mass movement—
Let us take a pledge that no rainwater will be allowed to flow wastefully from our rooftops into drains.
Let’s catch it. Let’s store it.
Because even rainwater must not go to waste.
This is not just environmental responsibility—it is economic wisdom and future planning.

Catch the rain. Save the future.
