Kolkata Gets a Gift of Joy – PM Modi Unveils Metro Expansion

New Delhi: Kolkata, the first city in India to embrace the metro, has now become the fastest-growing metro network in the country. Back in 1984, when the city’s first metro began operations, it was more than just a transport system – it was a moment of pride. Yet, between 1984 and 2014, only 27.99 km of metro lines were built.

In sharp contrast, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the past decade has witnessed the construction of 45 km of metro lines, a 161% increase over the previous three decades combined. From being India’s first metro city, Kolkata is now set to be the city with the fastest expansion – reclaiming its pride and legacy.

A Festive Gift Before Durga Puja

This Durga Puja, before the goddess arrives, Kolkata receives a very special offering – 13.62 km of brand-new metro connectivity across three vital corridors:

Green Line (Esplanade–Sealdah)

Yellow Line (Noapara–Jai Hind Airport)

Orange Line (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay–Beleghata)

This isn’t just about trains and tracks. It’s about people, families, and emotions. Traffic-free pandal hopping, easier festive gatherings, and faster commutes will redefine the city’s Puja celebrations. The metro will connect households across North and South Kolkata, from Kalighat to Dakshineswar, ensuring smooth journeys filled with joy.

Transforming Everyday Life

Green Line (Esplanade–Sealdah): What once took an hour by road will now take only 11 minutes, benefiting over 6 lakh daily commuters.

Yellow Line (Noapara–Airport): A long-awaited dream comes true – direct metro access to the airport. Travel time from Esplanade to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport will shrink from one hour to 30 minutes.

Orange Line (Hemanta Mukhopadhyay–Beleghata): Linking Science City, key hospitals, and soon the Salt Lake IT hub, this corridor will bring relief for patients, families, and young professionals.

Beyond Connectivity – Growth & Prosperity

The extended network is weaving Kolkata closer than ever before, reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion, and cutting down pollution. Busy stretches like Sealdah Flyover, EM Bypass, and Airport Road will finally breathe easier.

Moreover, the metro has become a driver of local economy – boosting businesses around hubs like Park Street, Gariahat, and Esplanade, creating jobs, and opening up new opportunities.

A Journey of Pride

Today, what started in 1984 as India’s very first metro is entering a new era of speed, efficiency, and inclusivity. Journeys that once stole hours from people’s lives are now being completed in minutes – giving families, students, and workers precious time for what truly matters.

This is Kolkata’s moment – a city that gave India its first metro, now celebrating its fastest growth phase ever. It’s a journey of pride, progress, and connection – a metro that not only carries passengers but also brings hearts closer, especially during the festival of joy.
