In a remarkable and pioneering move, the Government of Gujarat has taken a meaningful step towards children's healthcare, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of juvenile diabetes. Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has become the first state in the world to introduce a government scheme dedicated to providing timely diagnosis and treatment for children suffering from diabetes.
Allocating an impressive budget of Rs 13.88 crore for 2023-24, the state aims to expand and enhance this program as per the requirements. This initiative holds great significance for India, which has the highest number of children afflicted with type-1 diabetes in the world.
In contrast to developed countries like America, where such facilities are usually available only to children with insurance coverage, the Gujarat government has extended this crucial support to all children and adolescents suffering from diabetes across the state. This landmark scheme is not just limited to urban areas but will also encompass rural regions.
Under the program, children diagnosed with type-1 diabetes can access regular check-ups and necessary treatment. A coordinated effort between school health and child care teams and mobile health teams will ensure effective screening of children up to 18. Additionally, Community Health Centers and Urban Medical Centers (HWC) will provide continuous check-ups and care for those above 18.
Dr. Smita Ben Joshi and Dr. Rawal Shukla, who have been working tirelessly to raise awareness about diabetes in children, both in India and abroad, have expressed immense gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Bhai Mandaviya, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai Patel, and Health Minister Hrishikesh Bhai Patel for their unwavering support in implementing this groundbreaking scheme. Both doctors firmly believe this achievement should serve as a beacon of hope for children with diabetes worldwide.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Smita Ben Joshi and Dr. Rawal Shukla, residents of Vish Nagar near Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hometown of Badnagar, have been actively promoting awareness about childhood diabetes at their own expense. They have undertaken extensive journeys, covering 7500 kilometers in America and India, to educate people on this critical health issue. Their dedication and efforts have garnered recognition and appreciation, including a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to America.
This pioneering initiative by the Gujarat government is a testament to India's commitment to improving the lives of its youngest citizens and sets a remarkable example for the global community. Hopefully, this scheme will serve as a guiding light for children with diabetes worldwide, making a significant difference in their lives and contributing to a healthier future for generations to come.
