Udaipur Doctors Lead by Example in Water Conservation

Udaipur: In a recent meeting of the Medical Practitioners’ Society, Udaipur, the city’s renowned Water Hero Dr. P.C. Jain addressed members on the critical role of doctors in promoting environmental awareness, particularly in water conservation.

Dr. Jain shared that more than 115 doctors in Udaipur have implemented rainwater harvesting systems at their hospitals, clinics, and personal residences. This collective initiative has successfully redirected millions of liters of rainwater, which would have otherwise gone to waste, into groundwater recharge systems. The result has been a measurable improvement in both groundwater levels and water quality across the region.

Key Features of the Rainwater Harvesting Systems:

Rainwater falling on rooftops is channeled through pipes into storage tanks or recharge wells.

A multi-layered filtration system ensures that impurities are removed, making the water usable for non-potable needs such as gardening, flushing, and groundwater recharge.

Depending on the rooftop area, each system can collect between 100,000 to 500,000 liters of water annually.

Dr. P.C. Jain – Udaipur’s Water Warrior:

Dr. P.C. Jain is widely recognized as “Jal Mitra” (Water Friend) and “Water Hero” of Udaipur for his decades-long commitment to water awareness. His efforts include:

Conducting water awareness seminars across various neighborhoods.

Creating live demonstration models of rainwater harvesting to inspire professionals and residents alike.

Collaborating with local authorities for technical audits and consultation on water conservation.

Thanks to his tireless advocacy, the Medical Practitioners’ Society has emerged as a role model, possibly the only professional body in Rajasthan with such a high number of members actively contributing to sustainable water management.

Doctors as Guardians of Nature:

This remarkable initiative proves that doctors are not only healers of the human body but can also serve as caretakers of the environment. The Udaipur model presents a replicable blueprint for professional communities across India to engage in collective climate action.
