New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for his work ethic, efficiency, and distinctive style, has gained global attention not only for his administrative skills but also for his unique choice of attire. Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Modi's choice of the traditional turban, or "safa," worn during national festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day, has been a subject of fascination. Each year, Modi sports a different color and style of safa, making it a notable aspect of his public appearances.
A fascinating aspect of this tradition is that for the past eleven years, a single individual has been responsible for tying these turbans for the Prime Minister: Devi Singh from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Singh has adorned Modi with a safa during almost twenty national celebrations, yet he has never shared a photo of this moment with the media or on social platforms.
On the occasion of the 78th Independence Day this year, Devi Singh tied a vibrant, multi-colored "lehriya" safa for Modi, adding an extra touch of elegance to the Prime Minister's appearance. Singh, a retired Indian Army personnel originally from Balesar in Jodhpur, now resides with his family in Dwarka, Delhi.
Singh takes immense pride in his role, stating that there is no greater joy or honor than dressing the democratic leader of the world's largest democracy in a symbol of Rajasthan's rich heritage. He emphasizes that the safa holds a special significance in Indian attire, particularly in Rajasthan, where it represents regional pride and cultural heritage.
Since 2014, Singh has been entrusted with the task of tying the safa for Modi, a responsibility he has maintained with great trust and discretion. Despite the high-profile nature of his work, Singh has kept a low profile, avoiding any publicity about his unique role. Over the years, he has adorned Modi with various styles and colors of Rajasthani turbans, enhancing the Prime Minister’s charismatic presence.
In addition to Prime Minister Modi, Singh has also tied turbans for several other prominent leaders, including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former Union Minister General (Ret.) VK Singh, and various Chief Ministers of states. Singh maintains family ties with former Union Minister and Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and continues to offer his expertise at various events in Delhi, thanks to his exceptional skill in turban tying.
