Carlsberg and Water.org Join Hands to Provide Clean Water to Ganga River Communities

Udaipur,  Carlsberg Group in India today announced a new partnership with Water.org to provide safe water and sanitation to communities along the Ganga River basin, covering states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. This collaboration reinforces Carlsberg’s long-standing commitment to water stewardship by investing in impactful and sustainable solutions to empower regional communities.

Water.org works to solve the water and sanitation crisis in India by making these basic necessities accessible and affordable. The organization launched its WaterCredit initiative in India in 2004, collaborating with microfinance institutions, banks, and government schemes to provide small, affordable loans to families for improving their water and sanitation facilities. To date, more than 30 million people have gained access to safe water or sanitation through this model. By developing financial solutions at both the household and community levels, Water.org supports India’s mission of "Har Ghar Jal" (Water for Every Home).

Through this initiative, Carlsberg Group and Water.org will make approximately 247 million liters of water available to communities along the Ganga River, focusing on areas where the need for clean water is most critical. The partnership aims to provide safe water or sanitation solutions to over 1,12,000 people by March 2028. In addition to access, the collaboration will promote awareness to encourage long-term behavioral change and create lasting impact at the local level.

This effort aligns with Carlsberg Group’s ambitious global target to replenish 100% of the water used at its breweries and beverage sites in high water-risk areas by 2030.

Nilesh Patel, Managing Director of Carlsberg India, said:
“At Carlsberg India, we believe water is not just a resource—it is a lifeline. Our partnership with Water.org underscores our commitment to sustainable water management and community well-being. By facilitating access to safe water and sanitation, we empower families to lead healthier lives, overcome challenges, and build a better future. Investing in water means investing in people, sustainability, and long-term progress.”

Gary White, CEO and Co-Founder of Water.org, said:
“Our partnership with Carlsberg amplifies the impact of our proven solutions—helping millions take control of their access to safe water and sanitation through financial empowerment. By joining our network of partners, Carlsberg is helping accelerate progress in India, where safe water and sanitation access can improve health, save time, and unlock a brighter future for families in need.”

Access to clean water leads to better health, stronger families, and increased gender equality. This partnership aims to create sustainable, positive change for communities along the Ganga River, enabling them to thrive despite climate challenges.
