NUJI to Launch Nationwide Campaign for Restoration and Expansion of Working Journalists Act

Udaipur, National Union of Journalists (India) President Ras Bihari announced in Udaipur that NUJI will soon launch a nationwide movement for the restoration of the Working Journalists Act and its expansion to include electronic and digital media along with print.

Speaking at a meeting with officials of JAR Udaipur and JAR Rajasthan at Shilpi Aamantra Resort, Bihari said NUJI was the first organization to advocate recognition for electronic media and is now pushing for legislation to cover digital media. He emphasized the need to convert the Press Council into a Media Council to ensure all media platforms fall under one regulatory body.

He stressed that separate rules may apply to different media formats, but all should be treated equally under a common platform. The restored Working Journalists Act must also include provisions for electronic and digital media.

The upcoming movement will also raise demands for journalist pensions, safety, the formation of a Media Council, and a National Register of Journalists.

NUJI National General Secretary Pradeep Tiwari added that NUJI’s efforts have led to pension, insurance, and accreditation benefits for journalists in many states, with some even achieving accreditation at the tehsil level. NUJI is working to implement such provisions nationwide.

Earlier, NUJI officials were honored by JAR office-bearers with traditional turbans and mementos, including a portrait of Maharana Pratap.

Notably, both national leaders were in Udaipur as guests for the two-day AGM of the All India Federation of PTI Employees’ Unions held on June 28–29.
