Successful Removal of Foreign Body Resolves Rare Lung Infection Case at PIMS Hospital Udaipur

Udaipur : The Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Umarda, Udaipur has successfully resolved a rare and complex case of recurrent lung infections caused by a foreign body in the lung.

Chairman Ashish Agrawal shared that the patient had been suffering for several weeks from persistent cough and breathlessness. Initial chest X-rays did not reveal a clear diagnosis. To investigate further, a High-Resolution CT (HRCT) scan was conducted. It revealed a cavity in the upper lobe of the left lung, bronchiectasis in the lower lobe, and ground-glass opacity in the lower right lobe — suggesting possible infection or inflammation.

A flexible bronchoscopy was then performed by the experienced Department of Respiratory Medicine at PIMS. The team included faculty members Dr. Sanidhya Tak, Dr. Karan Singhal, Dr. Dikshant Chaudhary, Dr. Aniruddh, and postgraduate trainees Dr. Gurmihar Singh, Dr. Arpit Johar, Dr. Gaurang, and Dr. Shubhnish Chaudhary.

During the bronchoscopy, a shocking discovery was made — a peanut was lodged in the bronchus of the lower right lung. Typically, such cases require rigid bronchoscopy and general anesthesia, but in this case, the team safely extracted the peanut using a dormia basket through flexible bronchoscopy — without anesthesia.

Following the removal of the foreign body, the patient’s symptoms, including chronic cough and breathlessness, completely disappeared, and he was also freed from oxygen therapy.

Under the leadership of Chairman Ashish Agrawal, this case represents not only a significant medical success but also emphasizes the importance of suspecting foreign body aspiration in adults with unexplained lung symptoms.
