Shepherd Memorial Church, Udaipur – A Glorious Legacy of 134 Years

The Shepherd Memorial Church, located in the heart of Udaipur city, stands as one of the oldest and most historic Christian churches in the region. Today, this sacred place celebrates its 134th Foundation Day with a special prayer gathering, where believers from all churches of Udaipur are expected to attend. The chief guest of the event will be Bishop Right Reverend Ramson Victor, Diocese of Rajasthan.

The church was founded in 1891 and has since become not only a center of faith for the Christian community but also a symbol of Mewar’s religious tolerance, tradition, and social harmony.

The church was established by British medical missionary Dr. James Shepherd, who served as a physician in the royal court of Maharana Fateh Singh Ji. Through his medical services, Dr. Shepherd contributed greatly to public welfare, and also opened a new chapter of spiritual guidance and service for the citizens of Udaipur.

Maharana Fateh Singh Ji, known for his religious tolerance, generously provided land and resources for the church’s construction. On August 4, 1889, the land for the church was officially granted by the Maharana. This gesture reflected the secular and respectful outlook of the Mewar princely state. After nearly 23 months of construction, the church building was completed and dedicated on July 5, 1891, in the presence of Maharana himself.

Built in Gothic architectural style, the church remains intact in its original form and is one of the few churches in Rajasthan that, despite its age, continues to hold regular worship services and outreach programs.

For 134 years, the Shepherd Memorial Church has served the spiritual and social needs of the people of Udaipur and surrounding areas. Through this church, many initiatives in education, healthcare, and community welfare have been carried out.

This sacred place has always spread a message of love, peace, and service, not only for the Christian community but also for people of all faiths.

As the church celebrates its 134th consecration anniversary, it continues to shine as a beacon of unity and service. In the coming times, the church plans to conduct spiritual training programs for youth, social service projects, educational support initiatives, and cultural events.

The original structure will be preserved and enhanced as a historical heritage site.

The church administration is committed to developing this holy place as not just a place of worship for future generations, but also a center of unity, witness, and service.

The Shepherd Memorial Church is not just a building – it is a living history, a history of faith, service, and sacrifice. We vow to protect this legacy, expand its mission, and make it an everlasting source of inspiration for generations to come.

Our belief: “Where there is service to God, the welfare of society begins.”
