Udaipur : Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation, officially released the catalogue book titled “Painted and Printed Maps from the Udaipur Darbar.” Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mewar emphasized that every book, artwork, document, and historical listing preserved in the foundation's archives holds immense historical significance and is a treasure trove of knowledge.
He noted that Indian art is not confined to borders but is recognized globally for its unique identity. Many countries have established dedicated departments in their universities for Indian art and culture, where extensive research is being carried out—a matter of pride for all Indians. The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, continues to attract both Indian and international scholars through its research programs and projects.
Paintings and maps created during the 17th and 18th centuries in the Udaipur Darbar have been showcased in international exhibitions. Their value and utility are acknowledged not just in India but also by global experts. Dr. Mayank Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, shared that this is the first-ever catalogue based on painted and printed maps of Udaipur-Mewar. The catalogue was published in collaboration with the Getty Foundation, USA, which has been supporting Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation for over two decades in exhibitions, publications, and conservation of ancient paper works.
Dr. Joan Weinstein, Director of the Getty Foundation, praised the various initiatives of Udaipur-Mewar and described them as a valuable heritage that offers much to learn in today’s technological era.
The editor of the catalogue, Dr. Sheilka Mishra, has classified and compiled the maps and images under themes such as “Maps and Places: The Painted Image,” “Mewar Kingdom and British Topographical Surveys,” “City of Udaipur,” “Railway Chronicles: Mapping the Udaipur–Chittorgarh Railway,” and “List of Maps in the City Palace Museum Udaipur.” The catalogue is expected to be a valuable resource for researchers and curious readers alike.
