Formation of Praja Mandals

On account of excessive taxes and autocratic rules of princes and Jagirdars, Praja Mandal were formed in different states of Rajputana. These mandals provided wider base to the agitation and direction to the civil right movement and administrative reforms in various princely states.

In Udaipur state, Mewar Praja Mandal was founded in 1838 having renowed social activist and freedom fighter Manikya Lal Verma as it's president. With it's foundation, Mandal received a dose of fresh vigor with promising activist Bhooralal Bya, Bhawanishankar Vaidya, Yumunalal Vaidya, Dayashankar Kshtriya, Heeralal Kothari and Rameshchandra Vyas, Balvant Singh Mehta, Bhooralal Bya and Manikya Lal Verma were appointed as Chairman vice-chairman and Chief Minister respectively. On 11th May 1938, Praja Mandal was declared illegal by Mewar government. famous educationist 'Prem Narayan Mathur' was kicked out of Mewar on 28 Sept. 1938.

Main leaders of Prajamandal were arrested during "satyagraha" abated by Praja Mandal in October 1938. The "satyagraha" lasted till January 1939.

On 22nd Feb. 1941, Ban on Praja Mandal was removed. In 1941, the first session of Praja mandal was held in Udaipur under the leadership of Vermaji in which also joined Aacharya Kriplanee and Shrimati Vijya Lakshmi Pandit.

On this occasion arose the fresh odor of "Mohanlal Sukhadia" who ignited the flames of New Political Era in Mewar.
