Bird Park in Udaipur Fails to Impress Visitors Due to Poor Maintenance and Low Bird Count

UdaipurDespite being built at a cost of ₹11.49 crore, the Bird Park situated in the heart of Udaipur’s Gulab Bagh has failed to attract or satisfy visitors. The park, which features massive enclosures, houses only a handful of birds, leaving tourists disappointed after paying an entry fee of ₹25. Many express their dismay, stating, "There’s nothing to see here."

The enclosures are surrounded by large burrows dug by rodents, which have even entered the cages, posing a threat to the birds. Due to these rodents, snakes and mongooses are frequently spotted nearby, creating an unsafe environment for the birds. Many cages lack adequate sunlight, and artificial trees placed inside are covered in droppings. The presence of waste and moisture has led to foul odors and fungal growth, further deterring visitors.

Although official records claim that 28 species of birds—including macaws, cockatoos, sun conures, Senegal parrots, and California quails—are housed in the park, most are not visible. The actual number of birds remains very low, and many enclosures appear abandoned and dark. While the infrastructure suggests a well-planned facility, the poor upkeep has resulted in an underwhelming experience.

In the past year,  44000 plus  visitors came to the park, generating ₹9.57 lakh in revenue. However, most do not return due to the lack of proper facilities, maintenance, and visible bird life. From January to March 2025 alone, only 9,958 tourists visited the park.

Expert Insight:
Satish Sharma, Bird Specialist
“The Bird Park was built in accordance with the rules of the Central Zoo Authority, and expert consultation was involved. However, management responsibilities—such as proper care of the birds, rodent control, and cleanliness—must be taken seriously and improved.”

The forest department has stated that it will soon visit the Bird Park in Surat to study its successful model and implement necessary changes in Udaipur to enhance the experience for both birds and visitors.
