Bar Council of India Approves Law Courses at Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh Campus

Lucknow – In a landmark development, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has formally granted approval to Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh Campus to commence legal education programs from the academic session 2025. The university has been permitted to offer 120 seats in the 3-year LLB program and 240 seats across 5-year Integrated Law Programs. The official approval letter has already been issued by BCI.

This approval marks Chandigarh University, Uttar Pradesh – recognized as India’s first AI-supported multidisciplinary university – entering the legal education space. It reinforces the institution’s commitment to blending traditional legal education with cutting-edge technology and future-ready skills.

Three Major Law Programs Introduced
Under the School of Legal Studies, the university will offer three flagship courses:

  • B.A. LL.B. (Hons)

  • B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons)

  • 3-Year LL.B. Program

These programs are designed to deliver holistic legal education enriched with 21st-century tech competencies and a global outlook. The curriculum includes contemporary subjects such as:

  • Criminal Law

  • Civil Law

  • Corporate Law

  • Cyber Law

  • E-Commerce Law

  • International Arbitration

  • Taxation Law

  • IT Law

AI Tools Integration in Legal Studies
The university plans to train its law students using AI-driven tools like:

  • LexisNexis

  • Evernote

  • AI Lawyer

These tools will empower students to become digitally proficient in the evolving legal domain.

Leadership and Vision
Dr. Abhishek Kumar Singh has been appointed as the Head of the School of Legal Studies. With over 12 years of teaching and research experience, he holds degrees in LL.B. (Hons), LL.M., and a Ph.D. in Cybercrime. He specializes in the intersection of law and technology and has authored 3 books and over 20 research papers.

Dr. Singh emphasized the transformative phase of the legal profession and shared that CU Uttar Pradesh will offer industry-focused, AI-integrated legal curricula. These will include subjects like AI and Law, AI and Intellectual Property Laws, enabling students to address complex issues in data privacy, automation, and digital rights.

Hands-On Legal Learning Approach
Students will benefit from:

  • Judiciary exam training

  • Legal research tools & analytics platforms

These components aim to prepare students for real-world legal challenges and competitive examinations.

CU UP Pro Vice Chancellor’s Perspective
Prof. Dr. Theependra P. Singh, Pro Vice Chancellor, stated that multiple specializations will be available such as:

  • International Arbitration

  • Environmental Laws

  • Corporate & Business Laws

  • Cyber Laws

  • International Business Laws

  • E-commerce Laws

He highlighted recent judicial reforms in India, including the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and reiterated the university’s focus on experiential learning and practical legal education.
