Ishita Ganguly Calls ‘Chamkeeli’ Her Most Challenging Role Yet

Mumbai : Renowned actress Ishita Ganguly, who has made a strong mark in the entertainment industry over the past 15 years, has taken on one of the boldest roles of her career this year. From television and films to OTT platforms, Ishita has impressed audiences with her versatile acting — especially in lovable, bubbly, and mythological characters. But this time, she has stepped into the shoes of 'Chamkeeli', a role she describes as her darkest and most challenging to date.

Currently seen in Shemaroo Umang’s popular TV show Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain, Ishita portrays Chamkeeli, a character who appears innocent and graceful on the outside but is actually cunning, manipulative, and dangerous beneath the surface.

Talking about her character, Ishita said, “Chamkeeli is like a coin — soft and sweet on one side, but wicked and terrifying on the other. This is by far the most difficult and intense role of my career. Transforming myself into her has been a learning experience.”

Reflecting on her journey, Ishita shared, “I come from an artistic family — my mother is a ghazal singer, my brother plays the tabla, and my sister-in-law is also a singer. Though I grew up around art, I never thought I’d become an actress. Watching Madhuri Dixit and Rekha ji inspired me to pursue acting. This industry has taught me patience, courage, and how to embrace rejection with grace.”

On playing negative roles, she added, “I’ve received negative roles before but was hesitant, fearing being typecast. But Chamkeeli is different — she unsettles people, provokes them, and exposes their truths. That’s what makes her beautiful as a character. If people are reacting strongly, I know I’ve played her with honesty. Just like Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat, sometimes the darkest roles shine the brightest in your career.”

To aspiring actors, Ishita advised, “Talent alone is not enough in this industry. You must stay grounded during highs and lows. Learn to accept praise, silence, and rejection with an open heart. That’s the only way to survive and truly grow.”

In the show’s current track, Chamkeeli has found a new ally — Tapasya, played by actress Mansi Sharma. Together, they are plotting to oust Chhaina from the haveli and make Chamkeeli the new Thakurain. Whether their plan succeeds remains to be seen.

Watch Badi Haveli Ki Chhoti Thakurain, Monday to Saturday at 9 PM, only on Shemaroo Umang.
