**Udaipur** - Learning from the incident of fish deaths in Naila Lake, it is imperative to run aerator fountains in all lakes and ponds around the clock. Additionally, these water sources should be kept completely free from waste and pollution.
These views were expressed during a lake dialogue held on Sunday. Before the dialogue, lake enthusiasts inspected Jogi Lake, Naila Lake, and Govardhan Sagar to assess their environmental condition.
Lake expert Dr. Anil Mehta stated that fish need adequate oxygen to survive. The flow of organic waste and dirty water reduces oxygen levels in the water sources. During the rainy season, when clouds persist for several days, there is insufficient sunlight, increasing humidity, and threatening fish life. The process of photosynthesis in plants is hindered, reducing the oxygen produced by this process. Additionally, organic pollutants brought by rainwater flow reduce dissolved oxygen levels.
Mehta emphasized that to prevent fish deaths in Naila and other lakes and ponds, aeration in the water must be increased immediately. Aerators need to be installed and run continuously, especially at night.
Former member of the Lake Development Authority, Tej Shankar Paliwal, mentioned that there is litter scattered across Naila Lake. Once the lake fills with water, this litter will submerge and decay at the bottom. The administration should promptly remove all the litter from the lakebed. Paliwal warned that Udaipur must save all small ponds to avoid situations of water scarcity and flooding like Bangalore.
Director of Gandhi Manav Kalyan Society, Nand Kishore Sharma, highlighted that the entire area behind the government school near Jogi Lake is a crucial catchment area for this lake. However, plots are being sold in this vital region. If this is not stopped, this clear and beautiful lake will turn into a tank of filth.
Director of Abhinav Sansthan, Kushal Rawal, noted that in 2007, the Rajasthan High Court issued instructions for the hydrological, limnological, and ecological conservation of all small ponds in the Dr. Tej Rajdan vs. State Government case. However, these orders are being ignored.
Senior citizen Drupad Singh pointed out that the stone pitching of Naila Lake has deteriorated in many places, with stones coming loose. This should be repaired immediately.
Environmental activist Jayant Paliwal from the Naila region said that to make Naila Lake and other small lakes healthy, beautiful, and safe, joint efforts from public representatives, administrative officials, and citizens are needed.
