Restoring Indian Cinema's Legacy: "Manthan" Returns to Theatres Nationwide

The Film Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited, PVR-INOX Limited, and Cinepolis, is set to re-release the classic film "Manthan" (1976) across 50 cities and 100 cinemas throughout India on June 1st and 2nd, 2024.

Following its successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, this restored masterpiece by renowned director Shyam Benegal is poised to captivate audiences once again. "Manthan," inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien's revolutionary dairy cooperative movement, chronicles India's transformation into the world's largest milk producer. Notably, it stands as India's first crowdfunded cinematic endeavor, with contributions from 500,000 dairy farmers.

Starring an ensemble cast including Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, and others, "Manthan" was brought to life by acclaimed cinematographer Govind Nihalani and composer Vanraj Bhatia. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, underscores the significance of bringing back films like "Manthan" to the audiences they were created for, spanning from major metropolises to smaller towns across India.

Director Shyam Benegal expresses his joy at witnessing the resurgence of interest in "Manthan" and eagerly anticipates its nationwide theatrical release. Actor Naseeruddin Shah shares his emotional connection to the film and hopes audiences will seize the opportunity to experience its historic restoration on the big screen.

Govind Nihalani, reflecting on the meticulous restoration process, looks forward to audiences experiencing the film in its original theatrical format. Established in 2014, the Film Heritage Foundation is committed to preserving and promoting India's cinematic heritage, with notable restorations showcased globally.

As a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), the Foundation has garnered acclaim for its efforts in restoring and reintroducing forgotten gems of Indian cinema. Through its extensive collection and educational initiatives, it continues to contribute to the global community of film preservationists and archivists.

The re-release of "Manthan" symbolizes not just the restoration of a film but the revival of India's rich cinematic legacy, inviting audiences to rediscover and celebrate the country's cultural heritage on the silver screen once again.
