Udaipur: The third Peethadhish and Kulaguru of Medpat, Goswami Dr. Vagishkumarji Maharaj, released the book “Haqiqat Bahida: Maharana Bhim Singh and the Historical Narrative of Mewar (1778–1828)”, published by the Maharana Mewar Historical Publications Trust, Udaipur.
The release ceremony was graced by Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation, Udaipur, along with Goswami Dr. Vagishkumarji and Yuvraj Goswami Vedant Kumarji. The trio held an engaging discussion on the historical episodes mentioned in the book concerning Maharana Bhim Singh and the then Goswami Shri Vitthal Nathji of Kankroli.
The published Bahida sheds light on a sensitive era in Mewar’s history. Maharana Bhim Singh ascended the throne at the tender age of ten during a period of political instability. The document elaborately records the circumstances of that time, the decisive role of the Rajmata, the spiritual and political guidance of the Kankroli Maharajshri, and the treaty signed to safeguard the people of Mewar from British control. It also details the administrative developments following the year 1818.
This Bahida stands as an important primary source for understanding the functioning of British officials like Colonel Tod, Captain Waugh, and others who operated in Mewar post-1818.
Despite challenging circumstances, Maharana Bhim Singh’s nearly five-decade-long reign remained dedicated to the welfare of his subjects. He was known as a patron of poets and scholars and undertook the restoration of several ancient monuments of Mewar. The construction of Bhim Vilas within the City Palace is also credited to his vision.
The book has been edited by Dr. Swati Jain, Research Officer at the Maharana Mewar Research Centre, while Dr. Pratibha Acharya and the Head of the Department of History, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, have documented the personality and contributions of Maharana Bhim Singh.
