AIMs First-Year Students Participate in Thought-Provoking Plays on Water Conservation and Substance Abuse

Udaipur: At the American Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), first-year students witnessed the staging of two impactful plays – “Barbad Pani, Khatam Kahani” (Wasted Water, Ended Story) and “Nashe Ke 12 Haath” (12 Hands of Addiction) – directed by senior physician Dr. P. C. Jain, who has over three decades of experience in substance-abuse prevention and water conservation campaigns.

The program began with the Aarti of the Water Kalash, “Om Jai Jaldev Hare”. This was followed by the student-written play “Barbad Pani, Khatam Kahani”, which depicted public protests against a factory polluting groundwater. The performance aimed to raise awareness about water conservation. Dr. Jain then conducted a PowerPoint session, demonstrating ways to save water in daily life and recharge local water sources during the rainy season, as well as educating future doctors about waterborne diseases.

Students highlighted the concept of “invisible water”, showing how production of everyday items – wheat, rice, jeans, kurtas, sarees, t-shirts, chocolates, and even mobile phones – consumes enormous amounts of water. They emphasized avoiding unnecessary use of such items to prevent unintentional depletion of water resources.

In the second play, “Nashe Ke 12 Haath”, Dr. Jain illustrated how twelve symbolic hands represent various addictions and how giving in to them can trap individuals in substance abuse. He stressed that addiction causes immense pain to loved ones, especially parents, and warned against the rising issue of mobile addiction, linking it to aggression, poor communication, domestic conflicts, obesity, myopia, and brain health issues. He encouraged students to undertake daily digital fasting and other constructive activities to reduce these harmful effects.

Dr. Jain also discussed the differential effects of substances like alcohol, opium, tobacco, cannabis, and smack on men and women, noting how these impacts can carry forward to future generations.

The play “Barbad Pani, Khatam Kahani” showcased students protesting against a factory polluting groundwater, urging the factory owner to take responsibility.

During the “Invisible Water” demonstration, students highlighted that producing 1 kg of chocolate consumes 17,500 liters of water, while large quantities of water are also used in making sarees, jeans, and t-shirts, urging people to avoid unnecessary consumption.

The program concluded with a collaborative Garba performance, singing the substance-abuse awareness song. Dr. Jain asked students whether they would want to bring tears of sorrow to their parents by falling into addiction, to which all students unanimously pledged to resist all forms of substance abuse regardless of peer pressure.

The program was coordinated by Rahul Sharma, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Principal Vinay Joshi. Participants in the plays included Jahnvi Kakhani, Aditri Rohtagi, Shakib Ali, Tanishk Jain, Krish Taylor, Yuvika Dutta, Nehal Suhalka, Shikhar Jharwal, and Prem Parihar.
