Mumbai witnessed a historic celebration of ghazals as Taal Music & Films organized the city’s first-ever Mega Ghazal Singing Contest with the aim of promoting the genre and giving a platform to karaoke singers to evolve into live stage performers. The grand finale featured 20 talented singers showcasing their artistry. The event was conceptualized and executed by veteran journalist, writer, and director Devendra Khanna with the support of Vandana Aswani and Vishal Raskar.
A dignified inauguration and special performances
The show commenced with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony performed by legendary Jain singer and organizer Babulal Kothari. Singer Neelam Narayan followed with a devotional rendition of her recently released Ganpati song, setting a soulful tone for the evening.
Distinguished guests and musical personalities
The contest was graced by eminent personalities, including renowned lyricist Sudhakar Sharma, celebrated for penning thousands of songs—187 of them on the theme of chunari, which earned him the title of Chunari Geetkar. He has also served as a jury member on SaReGaMa reality shows and is presently working on his magnum opus project, Ramcharit Manas, with Amit Kumar as the lead vocalist and Satish Dehra as the music composer.
Also present were singer-composers Kirti Anurag and Satish Dehra, ad-maker Kishore Yashod, and ACP Sanjay Patil, among several dignitaries. The event received special support from astrologer Joshi Maharaj and Mangilal Jain.
The winners of the contest
The grand finale concluded with Osdan being crowned Ghazal King, while Supriya won the title of Ghazal Queen. Other male contestants who impressed with their performances included Mukul Mathur, Vishal, Dilip, Shabbir, and Rajendra Luthra, while female contestants like Ayesha, Smita, Manju, and Kala also showcased commendable talent.
The judging panel consisted of noted singer Atul Srivastava, singer Anupama Chakravarti Srivastava, and singer Neelam Narayan. They acknowledged the tough competition and remarked that many contestants came very close to winning, making the final decision challenging.
Tribute and closing ceremony
A solemn moment of silence was observed in memory of the late mother of popular singer Rachna Chopra, who had earlier judged the auditions for the contest and passed away just two days before the finale.
In the end, the Ghazal King and Queen were honored with trophies, certificates, medals, and gift hampers, while all participants received medals and certificates as a mark of appreciation. The event was gracefully hosted by Varsha Dagat.
