Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body Elections Likely by November–December in Rajasthan

Quick Comment

When will the bugle for local governments in villages and cities be sounded?

Amid speculations surrounding the expansion of Bhajan Lal Sharma’s government in Rajasthan, possible appointments in state corporations, boards, and other vacant political posts, the State Election Commission has made a significant announcement on Friday regarding the upcoming elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies. The Commission has also released a detailed schedule for preparing voter lists, which is being considered the formal beginning of the electoral process for these institutions.

Urban Local Body Elections: Timeline Announced

According to the Commission, elections are due in 49 urban bodies including newly constituted ones.

The draft voter lists will be published on September 24,

Special drives will be conducted on October 6–7,

Claims and objections can be filed until October 8,

Disposal of claims and objections will be completed by October 16,

And the final voter lists will be published on November 3.

Panchayati Raj Elections: Process Set in Motion

In the rural sphere, the tenure of 3,847 Gram Panchayats has already ended, and general elections are due.

The draft rolls for Panchayati Raj elections will be published on September 26,

Claims and objections will be accepted till October 5,

And the final voter list will be released on October 29.

The State Election Commission has directed all concerned officials to ensure timely and transparent completion of the voter list process.

Judicial Push and Political Calculations

Interestingly, only a few days ago, the State Election Commission had expressed doubts over holding Panchayati Raj and municipal elections in a short timeframe. However, the Rajasthan High Court directed that these elections must be conducted on time. Meanwhile, State Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra had also stated that the government would ensure these elections are held by December.

Now, the key question remains: Will the Bhajan Lal government announce the elections for Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies before the Monsoon Session of the State Assembly begins on September 1, or will the bugle for local governments sound only after the Shraddh Paksha concludes?
