Zinc Essential for Crops and Human Health – Dr. Karnataka

 

Udaipur,  A one-day workshop was organized at the constituent Directorate of Research of Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT), Udaipur. The workshop was held under the joint aegis of MPUAT, the International Zinc Association, and Hindustan Zinc.

In his welcome address, Dr. Arvind Verma, Director of Research, stated that zinc is an essential nutrient for both crops and human health. In plants, zinc plays a vital role in the production of enzymes and hormones essential for growth. In human health, it supports immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, and cell division.

Dr. Soumitra Das, Director, Asia Pacific, International Zinc Association, New Delhi, highlighted the contribution of university scientists in enhancing food and nutritional security by using zinc in crops. He stated that the International Zinc Association is working in many countries where malnutrition is prevalent. Zinc and iron play a significant role in eliminating malnutrition and promoting better health.

Representatives from Hindustan Zinc Limited – Srishti Arora, Anshul Negi, Prodyut Gorai, and Indra Das – were also present at the event.

Zinc Crucial for Nutritional Security – Dr. Ajit Kumar Karnataka
Dr. Ajit Kumar Karnataka, Vice Chancellor of MPUAT, Udaipur, graced the event as the Chief Guest. He appreciated the work of university scientists and emphasized that the research conducted on the use of zinc in crops will play a crucial role in future agricultural practices and help address the issue of malnutrition. He pointed out that zinc is not only beneficial for crops but also vital for human health, especially for malnourished children.

Dr. Karnataka shared that approximately 48% of India’s soil is zinc-deficient, and nearly 30% of children globally suffer from zinc deficiency. He stressed that the use of zinc is essential to protect children from malnutrition and maintain overall health. He also shared insights on the benefits of using zinc in crops based on his experience.

Dr. S.K. Sharma, Assistant Director General (HR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, shared his views online regarding the benefits of using zinc in crops.

Dr. Devendra Jain, Assistant Professor, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur, presented three years of research findings through a PowerPoint presentation. Bio-fertilizers were also distributed to farmers from Dabok and Madar regions.

The program was moderated by Dr. Latika Sharma and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Subhash Meena, Project In-charge of the Zinc Project. Around 100 officials, scientists, students, and farmers participated in the workshop.
