One-Day National Seminar on 'Biodiversity and Sustainable Practices' Organized

Nature is ready to give everything—but not to the greedy – Prof. Sarangdevot

Udaipur,  A one-day national seminar on “Biodiversity and Sustainable Practices” was organized by the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth at the IT Auditorium, Pratapnagar. The seminar brought together experts, scholars, and students to discuss the growing importance of ecological balance, traditional knowledge, and sustainable development.

Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Rajasthan’s Minister for Tribal Area Development and Home Guards, Babulal Kharadi, emphasized that India was called a "Vishwaguru" (world teacher) not by itself, but by the world. This stature was earned through India’s sage traditions, cultural values, and the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world as one family. He stressed that both nature and culture have been affected by consumerist thinking, leading to ecological crises. The Minister called upon the youth to explore traditional knowledge systems for biodiversity and sustainable practices, and urged them to engage in research, as “they are the future of India.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof. S.S. Sarangdevot, in his keynote address, said “Nature is willing to give everything, but not to the greedy.” He highlighted that we must take only what we need and also give back to nature. Citing the Gita and Rigveda, he explained the ancient Indian understanding of ecology and biodiversity, and called for adoption of eco-friendly habits embedded in Indian festivals and customs. He stressed on working in areas such as water, forest, land, organic farming, and sustainable water management to ensure harmony between biodiversity and development.

Guest of Honour, Anurag Saxena, Director of Pratap Gaurav Kendra, elaborated on Mewar’s historical commitment to environmental conservation. He cited examples from Maharana Pratap’s ecological agricultural practices, organic manures, and soil-water preservation techniques, and spoke about the documentation of ecological traditions in the region, including the Aawal-Bawal Treaty for biodiversity protection.

Chancellor and Presiding Officer, Bhanwarlal Gurjar, emphasized the integration of traditional rural practices with modern knowledge to pass on sustainable living to future generations. He advocated for a lifestyle shift back to nature to address environmental issues.

In the technical sessions, former ACF of Rajasthan Forest Department Dr. Satish Kumar Sharma shared insights on biodiversity in tribal and rural areas. Dr. Sunil Dubey from the Institute of Ecology and Livelihood Action presented his views through a detailed presentation.

Organizing Secretary Dr. Sapna Shrimali welcomed the guests and informed that over 150 participants took part in the seminar. Paper and poster presentations on the seminar theme were held during the technical sessions.

Present on the occasion were Registrar Dr. Tarun Shrimali, Dr. Sunil Dubey, Secretary Prof. Bhairulal Lohar, Dr. Avneesh Nagar, Prof. Gajendra Mathur, Prof. I.J. Mathur, Dr. Neeru Rathore, Dr. Sapna Shrimali, Dr. Uttam Sharma, Dr. Jaisingh Jodha, and deans, directors, students, and scholars of the university.
