Udaipur, Under the aegis of the Pratap Gaurav Kendra – Rashtriya Tirth, the 450th anniversary celebration of the historic Haldighati Victory began with a “Rashtra Chetna Yajna” on the land of Haldighati. As the first step in this grand observance, two important workshops were jointly inaugurated on the second day of the celebrations. These include a Mewar Miniature Painting Workshop and a Workshop on Epigraphy, Paleography, and Linguistics, both running from June 18 to June 25, with participants from Udaipur and other cities.
Anurag Saxena, Director of Pratap Gaurav Kendra, informed that the workshops were inaugurated with a lamp-lighting ceremony held before the statue of Veer Shiromani Maharana Pratap. Distinguished guests included Prof. Bhagwati Prakash Sharma, President of the Maharana Pratap Committee; CA Mahavir Chaplot, Convenor of the Haldighati Victory Celebrations; veteran artist Anandi Lal Sharma; Dr. Dharmveer Sharma, retired Director, Archaeological Survey of India; and Prof. Jeevan Singh Kharkwal, Director, Institute of Literature, Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.
In his address, Prof. Bhagwati Prasad Sharma highlighted that the vibrant colors and originality of the Mewar painting style have earned global acclaim. “Mewar’s paintings are not just visuals; they reflect the soul of Indian culture. It is from Mewar’s painting tradition that other styles of Rajasthan have evolved, which is why it holds such a pivotal place,” he said.
The painting workshop, being held in collaboration with Sanskar Bharti and the West Zone Cultural Centre, is being coordinated by Prof. Ram Singh Bhati. He informed that 23 artists specializing in Mewar miniature painting from Udaipur will create artwork during this period, accompanied by daily art discussions to help participants delve into the nuances of the style.
The script and linguistics workshop, organized in collaboration with ICHR and the Institute of Literature, JRNRV, is being coordinated by Dr. Vivek Bhatnagar. He explained that the workshop primarily focuses on the Brahmi script and its later forms. Participants will begin by learning the Ashokan Brahmi script and will also be trained to read Ashokan inscriptions.
