Baitul Muqqadas: Masjid-ul-Aqsa

Masjid-ul-Aqsa, the sacred site of pilgrimage for the three Abrahamic religions—Islam, Christianity, and Judaism—has long drawn reverence from millions across the world. For centuries, this revered mosque has been a beacon of spiritual devotion.

Following the Second World War, the Jewish community—having endured immense persecution, particularly from Christian orthodoxy in Europe—sought refuge and revival. The newly established United Nations proposed the settlement of Jewish populations in Palestine as a protective measure. Upon settlement, the Jewish community rapidly mobilized, emphasizing education, science, and technological advancement. With substantial support from the United States and the United Kingdom, they developed a formidable military force, equipped with advanced weaponry.

Originally granted a portion of land by the Palestinian government for refuge, the Jewish settlers gradually extended their control. Despite former Palestinian President Yasser Arafat raising the matter at the United Nations, these aggressive expansions were largely overlooked. Neither the UNO nor Arab nations took decisive action, and this collective silence only emboldened further occupation. In 1948, the Jewish state declared the captured territory as Israel—a move that stunned the international community. India’s then Prime Minister, famously known as the "Iron Lady," stood in support of Palestine, reaffirming India’s commitment to preserving its sovereignty—a cornerstone of Indian foreign policy.

Sadly, calls for justice and acknowledgment of Palestinian suffering have been continuously overshadowed by powerful political interests. Instead of promoting peace, the United States actively recognized Israel and supported its policies, further intensifying tensions in the region.

Today, Israel has emerged as a dominant force in the Middle East. However, its military campaigns against Palestinians have unleashed waves of terror, destruction, and displacement. Gaza, in particular, has endured relentless bombardment, leading to horrific massacres. The scale of devastation defies description—countless lives lost, children orphaned, homes and schools obliterated. The brutality has crossed every boundary of human decency.

Expecting the United States to mediate peace now appears ironic, given its own historical injustices towards Native Americans, whom it forced into reservations, stripping them of land and identity. Palestinians, likewise, are now victims of a similar historical displacement and violence.

Former President Yasser Arafat dedicated his life to peaceful negotiations, only to be tragically assassinated. Since then, conditions have worsened, with little hope of reclaiming lands lost through force.
