From Skill to Self-Reliance: A Flight of Hope through Talent

– Blending Traditional Arts and Livelihood under NEP 2020

When the aim of education is not merely to provide degrees, but to empower individuals with practical and entrepreneurial life skills, every academic department becomes a catalyst for social transformation. The Department of Fashion Technology and Designing (DFTD) at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur is translating the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) into reality with this very philosophy. Here, students are not only trained in the technical aspects of designing but are also empowered with traditional Indian handicraft skills to make them self-reliant and job-ready.

NEP 2020: From Knowledge to Skill
The Government of India’s NEP-2020 envisions an education system that enriches students intellectually while preparing them for practical, employment-oriented, and innovation-driven futures. In this direction, DFTD has made several innovative efforts that align with the "Local for Global" spirit, helping students gain global exposure rooted in local heritage.

Fusion of Traditional Art and Modern Education
The department offers diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs that emphasize practical training in traditional Indian crafts such as Akola’s Indigo Dyeing, Sanganeri Block Printing, Handloom Textiles, and Embroidery Handicrafts. Workshops and interactive sessions with experienced artisans provide ground-level learning and preserve indigenous knowledge systems.

Global Reach through Fashion Shows and Exhibitions
The department regularly organizes fashion shows, art exhibitions, and product displays where student-designed sarees, garments, and accessories are appreciated not only in Rajasthan but across India. These platforms provide students with insights into entrepreneurship, branding, and marketing.

Students Becoming Symbols of Self-Employment
In its efforts to link education with self-employment, the department has seen remarkable outcomes. Many women graduates have launched their own boutiques and are now providing employment to others—truly reflecting the spirit of “Learn and Lead”.

Neha Bhawsar: A Story of Inspiration
An alumna of the department, Neha Bhawsar, a science graduate, discovered her passion for fashion and handloom. She pursued training at the department and presented her startup idea in a state-level competition, winning a prestigious award and a ₹1 lakh grant from the Chief Minister. Today, her handloom outfits are being recognized across national and international markets.

Learning Handicrafts from Villages – Confidence through Immersion
Students like Aarushi, Ayushi Jain, Kanishka Vashisth, Anjali Sen, and Shagun Maheshwari traveled to rural areas and learned to weave handloom sarees using natural fibers. They lived and trained with local artisans, gaining invaluable experience and a deeper appreciation for rural culture and sustainable practices.

From Education to Empowerment
This innovative effort by the Department of Fashion Technology and Designing is a clear example that when education is blended with skill and culture, it doesn't just offer a degree – it offers direction. The department is truly contributing to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), where knowledge, skill, and livelihood form the three pillars of a strong and empowered nation.
