Chittorgarh, Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has developed a 16-hectare greenbelt on previously barren land at its Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter, showcasing a remarkable example of sustainable development. The project has now entered its second phase. The initiative employs Mycorrhiza technology, which promotes a symbiotic relationship between plant roots and fungi, enabling vegetation to thrive even in challenging environments.
The company has also implemented the Miyawaki plantation method at various operational sites, facilitating dense, fast-growing, and diverse greenery within a short span of time. Hindustan Zinc is the first Indian company to launch a nature-related financial disclosure report, integrating biodiversity-related risks and opportunities into its strategic planning. Additionally, the company has signed a significant three-year partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
In another landmark initiative, Hindustan Zinc signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Forest Department, Udaipur, for the rejuvenation and development of the Baghdarrah Crocodile Conservation Reserve. With a committed investment of ₹5 crores, the collaboration aims to enhance the natural habitat for marsh crocodiles, implement water conservation measures, and improve eco-tourism infrastructure including visitor amenities.
Ms. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director of Vedanta Ltd. and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited, stated, “Biodiversity is the heartbeat of our planet. From the smallest butterfly to the majestic tiger, every lifeform plays a vital role. Our animal welfare and biodiversity efforts are not just an add-on but a core responsibility. Through TACO and our conservation strategies, we are protecting the environment and fostering a future where animals and communities thrive together. Our partnerships with renowned sanctuaries reflect our deep commitment to preserving nature’s delicate balance.”
This MoU stands as a milestone in Hindustan Zinc’s long-term commitment to preserving biodiversity within its operational ecosystems. The company’s extensive afforestation efforts not only contribute to carbon sequestration but also enhance ecological resilience. During Van Mahotsav Week, over 2 million saplings were planted around operational units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. In collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the second phase of transforming 16 hectares of barren land—comprising Jarofix waste generated from metal extraction—has commenced.
Hindustan Zinc is also the first Indian company to initiate the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) with the aim of integrating nature-related risks and opportunities into its core strategy. Further, a three-year MoU has been signed with IUCN to strengthen conservation initiatives.
The company has been a front-runner in adopting innovative technologies and targeted initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance water positivity, recycle waste, and promote biodiversity. Recognized with a Leadership Band (A-) rating by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Hindustan Zinc continues its commitment to water security and climate action.
With the goal of achieving “No Net Loss” of biodiversity across all its mining sites, Hindustan Zinc is aligning its goals with the 2020 baseline and aims to maintain biodiversity till the closure of its mines.
