Every day, thousands of passengers board trains from Udaipur and other parts of Rajasthan. However, very few are aware of a critical Indian Railways rule: carrying dry coconuts in bulk during train travel is prohibited. The rule, which is often overlooked by travelers, has serious safety reasons behind it and violating it can lead to legal action.
Dry Coconut Classified as Flammable
According to Indian Railways regulations, dry coconut falls under the category of flammable items. While coconut is traditionally considered auspicious and passengers may carry one or two, carrying dry coconuts in large quantities is strictly banned. Authorities may confiscate the items and impose fines. In serious cases, travelers may even be deboarded or face legal proceedings under the Railway Act.
Why Dry Coconut is Banned?
The reason behind this restriction is scientific. Old coconuts stored in damp conditions can develop fungal growth, which can lead to the formation of methane gas inside the shell. Methane is highly flammable, and even a small spark can trigger a fire or an explosion-like situation. Therefore, to prevent fire hazards on trains, dry coconuts are included in the list of banned items.
Not Allowed for Sale at Railway Stations
Railway authorities have also prohibited vendors from selling dry coconuts at station premises. However, broken coconuts and their pulp may be carried in limited quantities for personal use.
Other Prohibited Items on Trains
Along with dry coconuts, several other items are also not allowed on trains without special permissions:
Gas cylinders or stoves.Firearms and explosives,Petrol, diesel, kerosene;Firecrackers and Inflammable chemicals;Pets that may cause discomfort to other passengers ;
Carrying any of these items without permission can lead to confiscation, fines, or legal action.
Advisory to Passengers
