Avinash Das Emphasizes the Role of Cinema in Addressing Social Issues

### Fourth Prof. Ravindra Nath Vyas Memorial Lecture Held

Udaipur, The fourth Prof. Ravindra Nath Vyas Memorial Lecture and film screening were held on Friday at the Vigyan Samiti auditorium in Ashok Nagar, Udaipur. Organized in the memory of Prof. Vyas, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, the event featured renowned journalist and filmmaker Avinash Das as the chief guest.

In his keynote address, Das emphasized that despite increasing corporate and market pressures, cinema must continue to give voice to the pressing questions of society. “If cinema fails to reflect the serious concerns of its time, it will lose its essence,” he said. Describing the current times as unusually turbulent—marked by distances, ongoing conflicts, and a lack of trust—he noted that it is essential to find a way to express ideas by balancing art, thought, and commerce. He also pointed out that mainstream Hindi cinema still does not adequately reflect the diversity of Indian society. “Dalits are yet to attain a decisive space in Hindi cinema, unlike the strong discourse present in literature,” he added.

Distinguished guest Dr. Laeiq Hussain, senior theatre artist and Director of the Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal, stated that both theatre and cinema teach us to face life's challenges with creativity and humanity. “An artist doesn’t need to speak; their work speaks for them,” he remarked.

Presiding over the program, eminent geographer and writer Dr. R.M. Lodha highlighted the long and impactful academic career of Prof. Vyas, noting his popularity among students for his teaching style, affection, and research acumen. Post-retirement, Prof. Vyas served as Research Dean at Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth and later worked as a professor in Malaysia for six years.

Shankar Lal Chaudhary, Chairman of the Prof. Ravindra Nath Vyas Memorial Committee, remembered Vyas as not just an ideal teacher but also a prominent figure in Udaipur's social, cultural, and political life. As convener of the Janatantrik Vichar Manch, he played a key role in uniting democratic and leftist forces in the region.

Prof. Vyas’s daughter, Dr. Iti Vyas, shared insights into the lesser-known aspects of her father’s personality. On the occasion, the book Samajwad ke Saarthi by Mahaveer Samta Sandesh Editor Himmat Seth was released.

The program began with a poetry recitation by Ashok Jain Manthan and featured the screening of the film In Galiyon Mein. Prof. Hemendra Chandalia conducted the proceedings, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Chandra Dev Ola.
