Patna, December 24, 2024: Political activity has intensified regarding the appointment of members to the Bihar Legislative Council under the Governor's quota. The state government makes recommendations for the appointment of these members, and it is expected that the constituent parties of the NDA will soon discuss and send the list of nominees to the Raj Bhavan. According to Article 171 of the Constitution, the maximum number of members in the Legislative Council can be one-third of the total number of members in the Legislative Assembly. This means that the Bihar Legislative Council could have 81 members out of the total 243 in the Legislative Assembly. There are ongoing discussions about increasing the current number of members in the council.
Currently, the Legislative Council consists of 12 members nominated by the Governor from various fields of excellence, 24 members elected from local bodies, and 6 members each from the graduate and teacher constituencies.
