Response by Union Minister of Environment to MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat’s Question
Udaipur, December 9 – The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has submitted proposals to the Ramsar Secretariat to nominate Udaipur as a Ramsar site. Additionally, several initiatives have been undertaken by the Udaipur Municipal Corporation to keep the city’s lakes free from pollution.
This information was provided by the Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Shri Kirtivardhan Singh, in response to an unstarred question raised by Udaipur MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat in Parliament. Shri Kirtivardhan Singh stated that the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) provides financial assistance to states under the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA) scheme. To ensure the conservation and management of wetlands across the country, the ministry has notified the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, which serves as a regulatory framework for wetlands. These rules aim to preserve, manage, and maintain the ecological characteristics of wetlands while prohibiting activities such as solid waste dumping and untreated discharge from industries, cities, towns, and villages.
Furthermore, under the Voluntary Wetland City Accreditation Scheme, the ministry has submitted a proposal to the Ramsar Secretariat to nominate Udaipur, Rajasthan, as a Wetland City.
According to the Rajasthan State Wetland Authority’s report, several measures have been taken by the Udaipur Municipal Corporation to conserve the lakes and prevent water pollution. A 202.77-kilometer sewer line has been laid across Udaipur city, and three sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 40 MLD have been constructed. Additionally, seven pumping stations have been established around Pichola Lake to prevent untreated wastewater from flowing into the lakes.
