DR. HARSH VARDHAN INAUGURATES E-CONCLAVE ON DOCTORS DAY AND A YEAR -LONG ORGAN DONATION DRIVE

EXHORTS DOCTORS TO RENDER THEIR SERVICES DURING DIFFICULT TIME OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC

PAYS TRIBUTE TO DR. BIDHAN CHANDRA ROY WHOSE DEVOTION AND TIRELESS EFFORTS RESULTED IN MAKING MEDICAL PROFESSION A NOBEL VENTURE

NEW DELHI-Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan today inaugurated through video conferencing e-conclave on Doctors Day and a yearlong organ donation drive organized by the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI). At the onset, Dr. Harsh Vardhan paid his rich tributes on behalf of the nation to Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Chairman of Medical Council of India during pre-independence era and former Chief Minister West Bengal whose birth anniversary as well as death anniversary falls on 1st July; this day is celebrated every year as Doctors Day to remember the devotion and tireless efforts of Dr. Roy in making medical profession a noble venture.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, in his inaugural address stated that the FOGSI has been taking lots of initiatives and working promptly during this COVID-19 pandemic to help women of India. He exhorted doctors to render their services during difficult time of COVID-19. Dr. Harsh Vardhan added that the SARS-COV-2 Coronavirus has affected almost all the countries in the world. He also stated that our country’s in a better position in comparison to developed and well-off countries in the world. Our fatality rate is 2.97 % which is quite less in comparison to other countries whereas our recovery rate is touching 60% which reflects that our healthcare system and infrastructure has been responding well to the threat posed by COVID-19. We have made functional 13,372 COVID-19 facilities which includes dedicated COVID Hospitals, dedicated COVID Health Centers and COVID Care Centers offering 13,18,977 beds including isolation beds, ICU beds and oxygen-supported beds. As regards the number of cases India has 0.65 cases per million population whereas Spain has 35.1 cases per million population, USA has 21.9 cases per million population while UK 15.5 cases per million population. All this has become possible because of our timely action and well-planned strategy to combat COVID -19. Dr. Harsh Vardhan expressed his gratitude towards Corona warriors who have been working day and night to treat COVID affected persons and prevent fatalities. Even our beloved Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has exhorted fellow countrymen to express their thanks to those doctors, paramedical staff, nurses, safai karamcharis and police personnel for offering their services in this difficult period.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan stated, “The issue of organ donation is quite close to my heart and I remember the movement called Deh-Dadhichi exhorting people to express commitment for donation of entire body after their demise; this movement was launched when I was Health Minister in Delhi Government.” He also referred to organ donors and organ recipients meet organized at AIIMS last year which presented an affectionate atmosphere. He stated , “One donor can save up to 8 lives by organ donation and heal up to 50 through tissue donation”. There is a big demand-supply gap for the organs supply in India where five lakh patients die per year waiting for a transplant. He exhorted the members of the FOGSI to concentrate on uterus transplant and make inspiring appeal for uterus donation. The Federation has about 260 affiliated member societies consisting of over 38,000 members across the world. It is committed to providing ethical and legal healthcare services, spreading awareness, promoting education and research, endorse and support reproductive health and rights of women and children of the community as well as protecting the interests of its members.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan also appreciated launch of a nationwide campaign by the FOGSI for the awareness and sensitization of organ donation and to take pledge to donate organs.
