Assembly Speaker Devnani Visits Rain-Hit Areas, Directs Emergency Relief Measures

Rainfall double that of last year; administration on war footing

In response to the heavy rainfall that submerged large parts of Ajmer, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani personally visited the affected areas on Saturday. Braving the waterlogged streets himself, he surveyed damage, interacted with affected residents, and issued a series of urgent directives to the district administration to ensure relief and rescue operations are swiftly executed.

Rapid Response Ordered

Accompanied by District Collector Lok Bandhu, officials from the Municipal Corporation and ADA, Devnani inspected critical flood-affected zones. He ordered the round-the-clock operation of mud pumps to drain accumulated water and directed officials to distribute milk, drinking water, and food packets to those stranded, especially children and the elderly.

He emphasized the immediate evacuation of residents from waterlogged colonies to designated relief shelters, of which seven have already been activated in the city.

Water Diversion and Drainage Management

Inspecting the Anasagar Escape Channel, Devnani instructed officials to use earthen sacks to guide floodwaters toward Khanpura pond, preventing further inundation in nearby colonies. He also visited the area behind Sagar Vihar and Deaf School near Anasagar Chowpatty, where he reviewed the water drainage setup through pumps and engaged with local residents to understand their challenges.

In Chaudhary Colony, he ordered urgent cleaning of choked drains to resolve persistent waterlogging. Officials reported that the inflow from Chaurasiavas and Varun Sagar had reduced, and water is being continuously released from Ana Sagar Lake to manage levels.

Preventive Action for the Future

At Varun Sagar Lake, where the water level had exceeded its 27-foot capacity, Devnani suggested that annual desilting be undertaken before monsoons to expand its catchment area and prevent future flooding. He also visited Boraj village to inspect the condition of a local pond dam, ordering reinforcement and long-term protection measures.

Administration in Full Action

Over eight water pumps have been deployed across Ajmer for non-stop water drainage. Relief materials—over 1,000 packets including milk, biscuits, flour, and other essentials—have been distributed. SDRF, Civil Defence, and Municipal Corporation teams remain actively deployed, along with continuous support from power distribution companies. Devnani also instructed Tata Power to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, with precautionary measures in flood-prone areas.

A comprehensive proposal to resolve the city’s long-term drainage issues has been sent to the state government. Work will begin in phases following financial approval.

Strict Warning Against Encroachments

Devnani appealed to citizens to voluntarily remove encroachments obstructing natural drainage routes. He warned that the administration will initiate strict action if such barriers are not cleared.

He reiterated that providing relief to the public is the top priority, and coordinated efforts across all departments are in full swing to bring the situation under control.
