“Complex Heart Surgeries Performed Successfully Through Latest German Technique” udaipur, Congenital Heart Disease & Aortic Valve Replacement surgeries successfully performed through Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery with the help of latest German Technique LEIPZIG in two female patients of 35 & 45 years of age by Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital’s Cardiac Thoracic & Vascular Surgeon Dr. Sanjay Gandhi. The operating surgeon’s team also included Cardiologist Dr. Danny Kumar, OT Staff, Technicians and Cardiac Anesthetists Dr. Ankur Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan Jindal & Dr. Kaplesh Mistry.


resident, Panchal, age 35 years, from past many years was suffering from breathlessness, tender weakness, pain in body and early fatigueability. On further investigations it was found that she was suffering from a congenital heart disease, hole in heart. The other patient reported with complications of breathlessness, abdominal discomfort and swelling in legs. On investigations it was confirmed that the valve of heart was leaking from sides. Due to which the patient was referred to Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeon Dr. Sanjay Gandhi. In both the cases the traditional technique is to perform the open heart surgery or use devices for hole in heart. But since the hole was big which required surgery, so both the patients were then decided to be treated with the latest technique of MICS through LEIPZIG.


The patients then had undergone thoracic Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, also known as MICS (Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery) a heart surgery performed through very small incisions instead of the traditional open-heart surgery. A long, thin tube (thoracoscope) containing a tiny high-definition video camera was inserted through a small incision in the side of the chest. The incision so made was only 2 inches long against the incision of 7 to 8 inches for an open heart surgery. This surgery was performed with the help of Tracheo Esophageal Echo-Cardiography; the new & advanced technology used in MICS along with LEIPZIG which assists the surgeon to operate on the heart with such a small incision. With the help of different Canellas, the patients were then connected to a heart-lung machine and the valve was replaced with a new valve measuring 2.7 millimeters as well as the hole was repaired.


Minimally invasive surgery involves risks similar to open-heart surgery, but the most common is to monitor heart through a very small incision and perform the surgery. It requires Tracheo Esophageal Echo-Cardiography as well as long & small diameter instruments for surgery. It also has many technical challenges & complications which makes it very difficult to perform. To operate on a heart with such a small incision is really very difficult. As soon as the incision is made, heart starts bleeding which is controlled with the help of different types of Canellas which are inserted in the heart through neck, legs or thighs. With the help of these Canellas, the heart is then connected to the heart-lung machine for the operation to be performed successfully.


Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery has several advantages over the traditional techniques as; reducing pain, retaining function, normal routine activities are not disrupted and can be started almost immediately, negligible blood loss, wound infections or post-surgical lung infections are reduced, cosmetic incision, very short hospitalization and faster recovery etc. as told by cardiac surgeon, Dr. Gandhi
