Successful Treatment of Diabetic Foot Gangrene Without Surgery Using Unani Medicine

A remarkable case has emerged from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, where a 62-year-old woman suffering from diabetic foot gangrene was successfully treated without surgery using Unani medicine. The patient had been dealing with chronic health conditions such as high blood sugar (diabetes for 25 years), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid issues.

Case Overview:

The patient complained of intense pain and swelling in the toes of her left foot. The big toe and three smaller toes had turned black, and the sole of the same foot showed yellowish skin with pus-filled infection—classic signs of gangrene. The issue began on 25th November 2023. Initially, one toe was amputated by allopathic specialists after diagnosing diabetic foot gangrene. However, due to her poor physical condition, further surgery was not advised. Despite ongoing medication, her condition continued to worsen.

Turn to Unani Treatment:

On the advice of a relative, Dr. Masarrat Riaz, the patient consulted Dr. Mohammad Shameem Khan (MD Unani), Senior Unani Medical Officer and In-Charge at Government Unani Dispensary, Bhimganj Mandi, Kota, Rajasthan on 23rd February 2024.

Dr. Khan advised dietary restrictions (avoiding potatoes, turnip, beetroot, brinjal, colocasia, and sugary foods) and initiated treatment involving:

  • Cleaning the wound with a decoction of neem leaves

  • Applying a special herbal Unani ointment

  • Administering custom-prepared Unani herbal medicines

Recovery Timeline:

  • After 1 month: Pain and swelling disappeared

  • After 2 months: Gangrenous part naturally separated from the foot

  • After 3 months: The wound completely healed

Most notably, no surgical procedure was needed. The treatment also helped in controlling blood sugar levels, a major benefit for diabetic patients.

Expert Opinion:

Dr. Khan emphasizes that in life-threatening and complicated cases where allopathic medicine has limited options, patients should also consider Unani treatment under expert supervision. According to him, Unani medicines:

  • Boost the body’s natural immunity

  • Reduce the side effects of allopathic drugs

  • Work toward eliminating the disease from its root

Proven Success in Other Conditions:

Dr. Khan has previously achieved successful Unani treatment outcomes in complex cases such as:

  • Gangrene

  • Kidney stones (without surgery)

  • Infertility

  • Vitiligo (leucoderma)

  • Psoriasis

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Compressed spinal nerves
