In a time when Indian chess players are making their mark on the global stage, a truly inspiring moment unfolded on June 9th, as the future of Indian chess met the very architect of its foundation.
FIDE-rated young chess champions Alokik Maheshwari, Aradhya Upadhyay, and Hardik Shah from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Hurda (Rajasthan), accompanied by their dedicated coach Mr. Prakash Parashar, had the honor of meeting Shri L.N. Jhunjhunwala at his New Delhi residence. These talented students are currently competing in the 21st Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament.
VKV Hurda is one of four institutions established by Shri Jhunjhunwala to promote quality education and holistic development in the rural regions of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This special interaction was more than a simple meeting—it was a heartfelt exchange between a pioneering legend and the budding stars of Indian chess.
Shri Jhunjhunwala’s contribution to chess in India has been nothing short of transformative. As the founder of the National Chess Trust of India in 1973, he laid the groundwork for a structured chess ecosystem in the country. His vision led to the organization of India’s first-ever Grandmasters Tournament in 1982 and played a key role in elevating the nation’s presence in the international chess arena. His tireless advocacy brought chess into school curricula and saw the creation of the Botvinnik Chess Academy, where legends like Viswanathan Anand and Abhijit Gupta were mentored.
His influence extends well beyond the chessboard. Through the LNJ Bhilwara Group, he has championed sports such as karate, archery, shooting, yoga, and athletics—emphasizing a well-rounded, holistic development model for India’s youth.
This remarkable meeting was a powerful reminder of Shri Jhunjhunwala’s enduring legacy. It highlighted the impact one visionary can have in shaping generations of talent and fostering a culture where sports and education go hand in hand. At the LNJ Bhilwara Group, we remain deeply proud of his life’s work and unwavering dedication to empowering young minds across India.
