Vermicomposting at Zinc Park of Hindustan Zinc Hindustan Zinc believes on the principle of 4R – Reduce, Recycle, Reclaim and Reuse. For gainful utilization of organic waste generated in the form of dry leaves and animal waste in Zinc Park of Hindustan Zinc, company has adopted Vermicomposting technology to process these waste and convert it into manure for development of the trees, shrubs and garden.
In vermicomposting, compost pits of a suitable dimension are constructed. This compost pit which is also called composting bed, uses shredded dry leaves and 10% cow dung to make the compost. A total six composting beds have been prepared in Zinc Park. Earthworms are collected and put into these beds. These earthworms eat the waste material and convert the waste into compost which is then used as manure for trees, garden and special plants like Chandan and other medicinal plants. The bed is turned every 7-14 days and the manure is recovered in 60 days.
Vermicomposting helps to convert the organic waste into stable non-toxic manure, which acts as soil conditioner for plants. Manure generated through vermicomposting also provides a suitable mineral balance, improves nutrient availability and act as complex-fertilizer granules.
