Hydatid Cyst in Lung successfully treated

udaipur. 37 year’s old man underwent surgery of right sided giant hydatid cyst lung at Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital, Udaipur. The team of general surgeons included head of department Dr. C.P. Joshi, Dr. Sanjeev Agarwal, Anesthetists Dr. Jaittawat, Dr. Seema Partani, Dr. Karuna Sharma and Nursing staff Hemant Garg conducted the surgery.

Dr. Sanjeev said that Chittorgarh resident, Kanhaiya Lal Kumawat (37 years) was suffering from chronic cough and difficulty in breathing from past few days. Nearby hospital’s consultation & ultra-sound investigations confirmed the presence of a giant cyst at the right lung which needs to be operated immediately. He was referred to GMCH. On consultation at General Surgery Department & CT Scan investigations prompted the doctors to operate immediately as this could have been life threatening. Barrett’s procedure was performed which included Thoracotomy, Enucleation of Cyst, Suturing of bronchiolar communications and capitonage to remove the cyst without dissection. The open surgery lasted two hours. The patient had been operated free under the medical scheme of Government of Rajasthan, Bhamashah Swasthya Bima Yojana. The patient is doing well post-operatively.
Hydatid cyst is a parasite disease which is mostly associated with liver. Generally, the size of cyst varies between 3 to 6 centimeters but in this patient it was 13 centimeters which required immediate medications, said Dr. Sanjeev; the operating surgeon.

A thoracotomy is a major surgical procedure that allows surgeons to access the chest cavity during surgery. An incision is made in the chest wall, and access to organs of the chest cavity is made by cutting through and possibly removing a portion of a rib. As a general surgical technique, enucleation refers to the surgical removal of a mass without cutting into or dissecting it. The closure of a cyst by applying sutures to approximate the opposing surfaces of the cavity is termed as capitonnage, said Dr. Sanjeev. The operation through this technique permanence a result of 99% success rate in patients; leading to low mortality.
